Sugar Cookie
A sugar cookie is a cookie made from sugar, flour, butter, eggs, vanilla, and either baking powder or baking soda. Sugar cookies may be formed by hand or rolled and cut into shapes. They are commonly decorated with frosting, sprinkles, or a combination of both. In North America, decorated sugar cookies are particularly popular during holidays such as Christmas and Halloween. The sugar cookie is called, sugar cookie because, when you are about to bake them, you put sugar on the top of them. (To make sugar cookies big, and fluffy don't use a store mix, make them without a mix, and bake them from scratch.)
History
In the mid-1700s, German Protestant settlers in the Nazareth area of Pennsylvania perfected a sugar cookie recipe called the Nazareth Sugar Cookie . On September 5, 2001, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania adopted the sugar cookie as its official cookie.
Sugar cookies probably derived from an earlier, unleavened cookie called a jumble.
